Katie Rivers, a wildlife photographer, was driving through the winding roads of Mendocino County, California, when a red fox darted into her path.
“At first I thought it was hurt,” she said. “But it stood in front of my car and just stared at me. Like it wanted me to get out.”
Curious — and a little concerned — she stopped the car and stepped outside. The fox didn’t run. Instead, it turned around, trotted a few feet into the forest, then paused and looked back at her.
Katie followed.
What she found just off the road nearly brought her to tears.

Lying in the tall grass was a tiny fox kit, weak and whimpering — covered in ticks, mites, and biting bugs.
