Early Life and Education
Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, Robert Francis Prevost grew up in a devout Catholic family with French, Italian, and Spanish roots. His father, Louis, was an educator and catechist, while his mother, Mildred, worked as a librarian.
Prevost’s early involvement in the Church included serving as an altar boy and attending the parish school at St. Mary of the Assumption near Dolton, Illinois. He pursued higher education at Villanova University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 1977. Feeling a calling to religious life, he joined the Order of Saint Augustine the same year. He professed his solemn vows in 1981 and was ordained a priest in Rome in 1982. Prevost furthered his studies at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum), obtaining a licentiate and doctorate in Canon Law by 1987.
